D&D and Fantasy Fiction: Giants in the Oerth

How has fantasy literature influenced and inspired the tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons? How has the relationship between the two fantasy media developed over time? On 28 January 2021 we were delighted to co-host, alongside the Centre for Fantasy and the Fantastic, a public event on D&D and Fantasy to seek answers to these (and many other) questions!

The event begun with a short introduction to contemporary Dungeons & Dragons by PhD student Grace A. Worm – with a brief, but fun, dip into how to play! We then had an excellent talk by Tolkien scholar and RPG designer/editor John D. Rateliff, titled: “D&D and Fantasy Fiction: Giants in the Oerth”, followed by a lively Q&A chaired by PhD student Emma French.

  • John D. Rateliff’s talk is available to read here.
  • If you missed the event, you can catch up with the recording here.
  • You can also read an event report by Fantasy MLitt student Hannah Burton here, accompanied with a list of texts and games mentioned in the event and chat.
